My name RL. I am a mother, a wife, Traditional Owner. I look after my family and my country. Long time, I didn’t understand my rights as a person with disability.
When this project start, I sit with my family, with workers, with other people in community. We talk together. At first, I was quiet. I didn’t understand this word “rights.” Service mob didn’t understand it too. We all learning together, step by step.
Then I get one-on-one teaching. My family help me, the team help me. They talk in way I understand, use simple talk, use family way. Slowly I start to see — I do have rights. I can speak up. I can say what I need.
Now I feel strong. I know my rights. I talk up for myself. I help other people too. I tell them, “You got rights too. You can speak up.” I been mentor in this project. I share story so other mob in Utopia can feel strong like me.
My family stand with me. They support me. Now I use my voice for my people. I feel proud. I feel strong.
When I first come to NDIS, I didn’t know nothing. I didn’t know my plan, I didn’t know my supports. I just take what people give me. I think, “that’s it, that’s the only way.”
Then people teach me, through MyRights. They tell me, “You got rights, brother. You got choice.” I learn I can ask questions. I learn I can keep my story private. I learn I can say who helps me, and I can pick what kind of help I want.
Now I feel strong. If something not right with my care, I talk up. I tell the mob at service. If still no good, I can go NDIS and tell them too. I can say who can see my private things, and if I don’t feel safe, I can change it.
I learn to say “no” when I need. I tell people, “You got to treat me with respect, treat me proper way.” Before I just sit quiet. Now I got voice.
My family walk with me too. They learn with me. We feel strong together. We talk up together. We not shame.
Now I know my rights. Now I can choose. I can stand up for myself. I feel proud.
I am NS. Long time, I been quiet one. I don’t talk up much. I didn’t understand my rights NDIS way.
Then I go to MyRights workshop. They make it in my way. They bring local mob, talk in Alyawarr, show pictures, do activities with hands. Not just sitting and listening — was fun and easy way.
That way, I feel safe. I learn slow, my own pace. I start to join in. I learn, “I got rights. I can talk up. I can make choice.” My family learn too. Now they see me stronger, not just quiet.
I am still learning. But I know now, I can say what I need. I can stand up in my way.
